National Geographic Explorers invite you to plunge into the deepest ocean trenches and gaze upon the frontiers of our galaxy during an evening of thrilling storytelling. This month, five eminent researchers will present their work investigating our natural world and the impacts of human activities on it at CANOPY Menlo Park.
- Khaled Allen will explain how installing a radio telescope can unlock secrets of the universe. Khaled is the founder of the Sea to Sky Explorers Association, which connects like-minded explorers with scientists, helping them work within hard-to-access environments and overcome technical challenges.
- Dr. Brittany Beck will discuss her project, Protecting the San Joaquin Kit Fox Through Citizen Science. She is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education at CSU Bakersfield who focuses on citizen and community science capacity building in California and beyond.
- Joe Cutler, a freshwater ecologist and conservation biologist who surveys river systems in sub-Saharan Africa, will take us on a journey along the Kafue and Kwanza Rivers.
- Bill Gray is the cofounder of Symbiote.co, which makes low-cost sensors for in-depth understanding of complex environments. Bill will walk us through “Botany of the Future: 2099”.
- Sierra Garcia is an environmental writer, science educator, and interdisciplinary social-marine scientist from Monterey, California. We’ll learn about her Fulbright work in Roatán, a Caribbean island off the coast of Honduras, covering coral reef restoration efforts and the diverse groups of people devoted to those efforts.
- Kathy Ho is a classroom teacher at the Children’s Hospital School at Stanford in Palo Alto who is passionate about providing a stable learning environment for pediatric patients. She will share the significance of connecting children with nature to foster the next generation of environmental stewards.
